Many local libraries have small organizations that help in fundraising efforts and book sales. The South Fulton Branch is not different. The volunteer organization, Friends of the South Fulton Branch Library, supports the library through book sales, literacy programs and volunteering.
Keisha Kent Sawyer, president of the organization, said she was approached a few years ago by one of the staff members about volunteering.
“They said they were looking for some volunteers and asked if I would like to come by and that’s how I got started,” said Ms. Sawyer.
She said they have held book sales, summer reading events, storytelling for children, staff luncheons and more.
While the library does receive funds from the county government, sometimes a supplement is needed to help cover costs and needs. That’s where the organization comes in.
They have had anywhere from 25 volunteers at one time, but Ms. Sawyer said they are in need of more. Ages range from school age children to senior citizens. They meet every third Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the library, unless there is a holiday, in which they will meet the following Monday.
“Our motto right now is we’re looking for a few good friends,” said Ms. Sawyer. “And we would just be happy to have people come out in the community to see what we do.”
