Former President Jimmy Carter will make a public appearance at Emory University next week to discuss his creative side.
Carter will appear at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts Nov. 10 as part of Emory’s Creative Conversations.
“We invite visitors to campus to engage in a process of creativity and where it comes from and how to keep it alive,” said Emory University Vice President and Secretary Rosemary Magee.
She said Carter will discuss his creative interests, such as writing, painting and woodworking.
Carter’s relationship with Emory University began 27 years ago with the establishment of the Carter Center in Atlanta. Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, was appointed as an Emory University Distinguished Professor in 1982.
Since then, Carter has made several appearances at the university, mostly in a classroom setting.
Each year he presents a town hall meeting for Emory’s freshman class.
Next month, Carter will address a Chinese Study class.
Ms. Magee said she expected about 200 people to attend Carter’s Creativity Conversation, which is set for 2 p.m.
Carter has written two books — a novel, “The Hornet’s Nest” (2003), and a collection of poems, “Always a Reckoning and Other Poems,” (1995).
The event includes a performance by a quartet of students from the Emory Jazz Combos at 2:10 p.m., with Carter’s speech beginning at 2:30 p.m.
The event is set for Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. in the Emerson Concert Hall in the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. The Schwartz Center is at 1700 North Decatur Road in Atlanta.
