As they have done for the past 26 years, Bruce Genter and a few of his golfing buddies will host the Children’s Charity Memorial Golf Tournament on Dec. 4. It will be held at the Flat Creek Golf Club, 100 Flat Creek Road in Peachtree City. All are welcome to attend, registration begins at 9 a.m. Entry fee is a non-wrapped toy that will be given to needy children in the county. The Scramble entry fee is $20; and the Mulligan fee is $5.

Genter and his friends have chosen this tournament for the past several years to give back to The Real Life Center in Fayette County. The center connects families in Fayette with resources such as food, clothing, financial assistance, financial counseling, house wares, furniture and more.

The nonprofit has been established in Tyrone for seven years, according Director Cathy Berggren. Since its inception, the golf tournament has chosen to help the organization by raising toys and funds to help support its causes.

“Bruce really puts his heart and soul into gathering prizes and getting people together for this event,” said Ms. Berggren. “It’s just a great group of people trying to get together to have fun and make a difference at the same time.”

For Genter, he and his friends are delighted to be able to give back to the community.

“This started out with just my golf group wanting to have a Christmas golf tournament,” he said. “So 20 years ago we decided to look for a nonprofit organization to donate toys to. And we’ve been working with The Real Life Center for a number of years; we’ve given thousands of toys for needy children in Fayette County.”

With sponsors such as AirTran giving away six pairs of roundtrip tickets, to local businesses giving away gift certificates and prizes, and a low entry fee—Genter is hoping to attract many players for this cause.

“If you had to ask each one of our members it’s deep down inside of us the feeling that we’re helping a child have a toy to open that wouldn’t normally have a toy for Christmas that we’re looking forward to,” said Genter.

For Ms. Berggren this event will help make the Christmas holiday a bit brighter for the families the center assists.

“We wouldn’t exist unless we had people like this in the community that help make what we do happen,” said Ms. Berggren on the golf tournament. “It’s the support of the community and people like Bruce and his team that are raising money and toys that make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.”
