Residents in the Fairview area will soon have their own indoor recreation facility. The Henry County Board of Commissioners, together with the SPLOST Department, broke ground on the Fairview Recreation Center Nov. 12.

The design/build contract for the 33,000 square foot facility was awarded to MWC Construction and Richard, Wittschiebe, Hand Architects at a total cost $2.6 million. Similar in amenities to the J.P. Moseley Recreation Center in Stockbridge, the facility will feature two full-size basketball courts suitable for tournament play, a walking track, weight room, music room, aerobics room and an arts and crafts room that can be divided into two smaller classrooms to improve the flexibility of the space. It will also have space for staff offices and a community room with kitchen that can be rented out for parties. An elevator and bathrooms will be located on the second floor.

“This will be a safe haven for our children, where they can participate in after school programs. And its close proximity to the schools and library will help make this a learning hub for our citizens,” said District 5 Commissioner Johnny Basler. “This is something that will have a positive impact on our community.”

The Fairview Recreation Center will be operated by Henry County Parks and Recreation and located at 35 Austin Road in Stockbridge, adjacent to the Fairview Library. It is expected to be completed in fall of 2010. Workout, walking and basketball memberships will be available.
