The Peachtree Garden Club is honoring Margaret “Peggy” Sheffield Martin with a decorative Christmas tour of four significant Northside-Buckhead homes Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ms. Martin, a native Atlantan, has an illustrious history of community service: a contributing member of Peachtree Garden Club since 1953, she has also served as president; and has a service history with The Westminster Schools, Junior League of Atlanta, Piedmont Hospital and the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

Each home on the tour encompasses community history and architectural artistry. One is the home of the owners of well-known Boxwoods shop. The house on Woodward Way was once home to renowned local artist Comer Jennings, and the Vernon Road house was designed by noted Atlanta architect Neel Reid, while the Dellwood location is currently owned by a talented interior designer.

Tour co-chairs Debbie Felker and Elaine Morgan said the Peachtree Garden Club wanted to honor Ms. Martin’s service and to share the purpose of club membership to stimulate knowledge of gardening, conservation and civic improvements through a public tour of exceptional homes in the organization’s Northside sector.

Betty Balentine is the club’s current president.

The Peachtree Garden Club was founded in 1923 as a voluntary, nonprofit affiliate of The Garden Club of America Inc. Over the years the organization has established a substantial Community Fund to aid nonprofit Atlanta entities such as the Piedmont Park Conservancy, Rhodes Hall, Historic Oakland Cemetery, the Neel Reid Scholarship at the University of Georgia and the garden enhancement at Shepherd Center.

All funds from the holiday tour will go to the club’s Community Fund.

“Rock the Earth: a Movement to Change the Planet” is a powerful call to action by the Captain Planet Foundation Dec. 11 at The Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta. The benefit has a serious message, but the fundraiser will present lively fun, great food and music for green carpet arrivals. Guests are encouraged to dress in glam-rock or eco-chic fashions.

This is the 15th annual X-MAS party featuring the symbolic Captain Planet and Planeteers and his creator, Ted Turner. This year Turner will share the spotlight with Ed Begley Jr., actor, environmentalist and host of “Living with Ed” on Discovery’s Planet Green Network.

Begley will be receiving one of the 2009 Super Hero for Earth awards for his work to preserve and protect the planet. For the past 30 years, the Emmy-nominated actor and environmentalist has seamlessly made the transition between theatre, movies, television and activism while he turns up at Hollywood events on his bicycle as a leader in the community and claims awards from some of the most prestigious environmental groups in the nation.

Co-chairs Sacha Taylor and Laura Turner Seydel claim the “Rock the Earth” theme was chosen because of the correlation between yesterday and today’s move toward social activism — a desire for improvement and a notion that every person should be involved. The foundation believes that living an eco-friendly lifestyle is not only a personal choice but also an intergenerational gathering. The X-MAS Party is more than a social event: It’s an environmental progression.

Cinda and Mark Boomershine along with Lewis Perkins are heading the host committee. Beth Kytle is serving as auction chair.

Proceeds from the green carpet evening will support hands-on environmental projects for youths grades K-12 worldwide. The foundation is committed to making a global impact with more than 500 projects throughout the United States, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Columbia, Costa Rica and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
