Children in DeKalb County will be able to get entertainment from a source other than television or video games this weekend.

On Sunday, the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra presents its annual Children’s Concert at Georgia Perimeter College’s Clarkston Campus.

“This is one of my most favorite parts of the season,” symphony conductor Fyodor Cherniavsky said. “We’ll be playing music that ranges from calming to energizing. It’s good for children to be exposed to the power of music.”

The hourlong concert, which is set to begin at 3 p.m., includes a mix of orchestrated music ranging from classical to jazz.

But the event has more than just music.

Former Ringling Brothers circus clown Rob Hadaway will perform tricks and gags while the orchestra plays “What’s Up at the Symphony,” an arrangement of tunes from classic Warner Brothers cartoons.

Also, performers from the Decatur School of Ballet will dance to the waltz chorus from Charles Gounod’s “Faust.”

The highlight of the concert is a performance of Paul Dukas’ “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”

Narrated by WSB-TV’s Jovita Moore, the piece tells the story of a young sorcerer’s apprentice whose attempts to clean by ways of magic go terribly awry.

The piece was made famous by the 1940 Walt Disney animated movie “Fantasia.”

“A lot of the parents will know this piece of music,” Cherniavsky said.

Other pieces in the show include an arrangement of the work of Duke Ellington, “The Star Spangled Banner,” and a John Philip Sousa march.

Cherniavsky said he expected an audience of more than 1,000 people for the concert, which he said is suitable for children of all ages and those who are young at heart.

The DeKalb Symphony Orchestra’s Children’s Concert is set for Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. in the gymnasium of Georgia Perimeter College’s Clarkston Campus. The campus is at 555 N. Indian Creek Drive in Clarkston.

Tickets for the show are $5 and can be purchased by calling (678) 891-3565.
