By the end of the year DeKalb residents could find more to do at two of the county’s parks.

Through a series of public meetings, the DeKalb County Parks and Recreation Department has devised a plan to make additions and improvements at Henderson Park in Tucker and Mason Mill Park in Decatur.

Some of the biggest changes will come at Henderson Park, where the county is looking to utilize seven undeveloped acres of the 118-acre park.

The county is looking to use the space for more walking trails, a pavilion, community gardens and picnic areas.

The seven-acre plot is off the Henderson Road entrance to the park near the facility’s soccer fields.

“This will give users of the area something to do and having a pavilion there will give teams somewhere to go after their games,” said Revonda Moody, the project manager for the projects for the Parks and Recreation Department.

For Mason Mill Park, the county will build trails to connect the 131-acre “urban forest,” as Ms. Moody called it, to surrounding neighborhoods.

The county also will work to improve the aesthetic quality of the water in the park’s lake.

The plans were developed through a series of six public meetings, three for each park, to gather ideas from residents.

With the master plans completed, the next step of the projects is the development of construction plans, Ms. Moody said,

Construction at Henderson Park is scheduled to begin in late May and Mason Mill Park improvements are slated for the fall.

Ms. Moody said the construction would not interfere with activities or current amenities at the parks.

Though no price tag has been determined for either project, Ms. Moody said the Henderson Park construction will be funded through the 2001 Bond Initiative approved by DeKalb voters, while the Mason Mill Park project will be funded through the voter-approved 2005 Bond Initiative.

The public meeting to reveal the Henderson Park Master Plan is set for Feb. 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The meeting will be in the Tucker Recreation Center at 4898 Lavista Road in Tucker.
