Ghouls and ghosts will haunt and abound at the American Lung Association’s Halloween Hustle 5K run/walk Oct. 27.
The race will begin at the Sandy Springs Farmers Market at 237 Johnson Ferry Road.
"This race will primarily focus on three of our programs,” said Todd Liscomb, development manager for the association. “This will help us partner with hospitals on lung cancer awareness and research, support our Camp Breathe Easy and support TATU [Teens Against Tobacco Use.]”
Kathleen Gamblin, thoracic navigator in the oncology department at Northside Hospital in Sandy Springs, said the hospital has started strongly focusing on lung cancer awareness.
“Lung cancer is a major focus that we’re looking at now,” she said. “It kills more people than the next four cancers.”
Camp Breathe Easy is a camp in Rutledge for children with asthma. All education programs at the camp are conducted by professional asthma educators, including respiratory therapists, health educators, physicians and nurses.
TATU is a middle-school group sponsored by the association, which encourages peer education and prevention of tobacco usage.
“We want to catch them before they start to smoke,” said Liscomb.
Runners and walkers are encouraged to race in costume, but it is not required.
Registration for the race is $30, and runners can register online at www.FightForAirRunWalkAtlanta.org or in the Sandy Springs or Ansley Mall locations of Phidippides.
Registration begins at 7 a.m.Participants will end the race at Meehan’s Public House at 227 Sandy Springs Place, where there will be live music from the Kurt Thomas Band, face painting, a moonwalk, games, costume contests and a DJ.
Meehan’s will also offer breakfast for $8, of which $1 will go the association. In addition to breakfast, the pub will have beer specials.
The Scary Scamper run for children ages 14 and under will start at 9:45 a.m. in front of Meehan’s. The cost of registration is $15.
Liscomb said about 150 runners have signed up, but he is hoping for 300 to 400 participants.
