“Really what the show is is a vehicle to perform a bunch of George M. Cohan’s music, and it’s wonderful music,” she said.
Songs include “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and the title of the show — “Give My Regards to Broadway.”
While the songs are American classics, Matchen said she does not know how familiar the younger generation is with the music.
“I don’t think a lot of the teenagers and children right now know this music, and that’s a shame to have it go away, so I’m glad to be kind of reviving it,” she said.
“I hope that they’ll enjoy it and come away humming it if nothing else.”
The musical’s storyline centers around a director trying to put on a Broadway show. The lead role of the director, Dick Foster, will be played by Michael Correy. Other major roles include Mary Collins played by Savannah Cookson and Legs Ruby played by Philip Mertz.
“There’s really no small part in this musical,” Matchen said. “It’s pretty much a real ensemble piece.”
Supported by the Alpharetta Presbyterian Church, ACT1 selects family-friendly performances for its four shows a year. The theater usually produces one musical, a Christmas show, a comedy in the spring and “something different” in the fall, Matchen said.
“Last year, we did a radio show in the fall,” she explained. “This year, we’re doing a night of skits.”
Matchen said the theater submits two plays a year to be judged by the Metropolitan Atlanta Theater Awards’ panel. “Give My Regards to Broadway” will be up for consideration by the awards program, she said.
Performances will run July 19 to Aug. 11 at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church at 180 Academy St. in Alpharetta. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for children age 12 or younger and seniors age 60 or older.
For the July 28 and Aug. 11 shows, patrons can purchase a $25 ticket for a “lunch and a show” special and enjoy lunch at Mittie’s Tea Room in Alpharetta before the musical.
