With a time of 20:51.9, Sheffield crossed the finish line faster than her 71 opponents, winning her first varsity race. The second-place finisher came in nearly 18 seconds later with a time of 21:09.32.
First-year head coach Becky Dunn said, “She is a very smart racer. She knows exactly what she needs to do and has no problem executing her plans. Her whole entire team was so incredibly proud of her.”
With this being Sheffield’s second season running for East Paulding she is also a captain and has been described as an “extremely dedicated and focused” athlete.
“She has been on a team with other successful athletes and has followed in their footsteps. Allyssa definitely has a lot of natural talent when it comes to running but talent will only take you so far. She takes advantage of her natural abilities and pushes herself so that she is able to have great success,” Dunn said.
Sheffield this year already has shattered her 2012 personal record of 20:33 – running for a time of 20:20 in this year’s season opener at the Berry College Clara Bowl Invitational on Aug. 31.
“She has made giant gains from last year. We look forward to her next race,” Dunn said.
