As a senior, first baseman and pitcher, Sparnell went 2-0 last week in the games in which he was the starting pitcher, defeating Sandy Creek, 5-4, and the three-time reigning state champs, Columbus, 6-3. However, Brown noted that while Sparnell is a good pitcher, that his know the only strength he provides to the team.
“While also excelling on the mound Sparnell has been great for us at the plate going 4 for 9. He is currently 4-0 on the season with one save,” said Brown.
Sparnell currently has 45 strikeouts in 30 innings with a 2.36 ERA.
“Opponents are only hitting .207 on the year against him,” Brown said.
Brown also said Sparnell is a “very good defensive first baseman”, making his performances on the offensive side a “bonus”.
Sparnell has a batting average of .333 for the season and Brown said he has been one of the team’s most consistent hitters.
Brown describes Sparnell as being a player that leads by example.
“As a coaching staff, we could not ask for a more coachable player. He will do whatever we ask of him. This kid just seems to do everything the right way,” said Brown.
As a senior, Sparnell does have plans on playing ball at the collegiate level; however, he has yet to sign with any school.
