Helping the Alexander girls’ golf team win the county championship for the third year in a row, Emily Cunningham is the star athlete for this team.

Led by head coach Lee Stanley, the girls were also region champs in 2011 and 2012.

At this year’s county meet, Cunningham won the trophy for low medalist.

Playing for Alexander since her freshman year, Stanley described Cunningham as a “very hard worker” as she plays golf year-round.

“Emily is always working hard on all aspects of her game,” said Stanley.

Cunningham recently signed a scholarship to play golf with NCAA Division II Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, WVa. She will be a part of the Battlers inaugural women’s team under the leadership of head coach Brian Schiffbauer.

“I visited a lot of schools, but I liked them the most. I liked their academics, their sports programs, the coach, what he is claiming to do with the team, and being a part of an inaugural program,” said Cunningham.

According to Stanley, Cunningham is the first golfer to sign a scholarship from Alexander.

During her time at Alexander, Cunningham said her most memorable moment was winning low medalist for the first time as a sophomore, the day her team won the county championship in 2011.

“I felt like I really accomplished something for my team and myself,” Cunningham said.

Along with her skills on the course, Stanley noted the high academics Cunningham maintains, stating that she has a 4.0 GPA.

“She doesn’t take failure lightly. Anything she wants to do, she’ll be successful because she’ll work for it,” Stanley said.
