Placing second in the boys’ shot put with a throw of 50 feet, 11.5 inches, Whitener finished behind his brother, senior Josh Whitener.
Head coach Jeremy Edwards said it was rewarding for Seth Whitener to finish so high.
“It is a great accomplishment for Seth to have the kind of year he had and finish second in the shot put at state as a sophomore. He is well deserving and works very hard,” Edwards said.
Seth Whitener also participates in the discus, the hammer throw and the weight throw. Placing just below his older brother, Edwards noted that the two are “very close and [are] each other’s biggest fans”.
Edwards also mentioned they have an older brother, Caleb Whitener, who throws for the University of Georgia, making this a family sport. With two years left of high school track and field, Edwards said, “Seth is an exceptional athlete that possesses great size, strength and mental fortitude. The sky is the limit for Seth.”
Whitener’s personal best in the shot put is 51-0.25 which he achieved at the AAAAA Sectionals April 27, placing second. With a launch of 48-7.25, Whitener won the Region 5-AAAAA shot put championship April 18. Whitener trains at Throw 1 Deep in Marietta where he has a personal trainer to help develop his skills.
