Adairsville Inn Restaurant serves up Southern charm with food

The Adairsville Inn Restaurant has a long history that spans decades.

Located in downtown Adairsville just off the square, locals are as familiar with the restaurant as they are with any other city landmark.

Built nearly a century ago it started out as the primary residence for J. M. Veach and his family.

However it wasn’t until 1990 that the home was turned into a restaurant said owner Janice Pulliam.

At first the Adairsville Inn served light fare such as sandwiches and salads but Pulliam said when she took over in 2007 she has something different in mind.

“I knew what I liked and I knew how I wanted to be treated at a restaurant,” said Pulliam. “I also knew what I liked to eat so that what I’ve gone with. I like a good high standard of service and I like good food.”

When she took over Pulliam said she had no background in the restaurant business, but she did, however, know where she needed to start — find a great chef.

Then, through a chance meeting she met Chef Lee Slocum, who has a solid reputation as a culinary master in Bartow County.

With more than 40 years of experience in the kitchen, “Chef Lee” as he is known locally, was the missing piece that Pulliam said she was looking for.

Slocum, who was raised in Cartersville and has earned his title as chef through work in restaurants across metro Atlanta, brings more to his cooking than just herbs and spices.

He and Pulliam make a great team and the pair has worked in tandem to create a menu that specializes in Southern cuisine and capitalizes on great service in a friendly atmosphere.

From traditional favorites such as fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, rutabagas and collard greens to Chef Lee specials such as sweet potato cobbler and ranch-style potatoes the Adairsville Inn Restaurant has made a name for itself as one of the finest spots for down home cooking, Slocum said.

It’s the restaurant’s variety and atmosphere that keeps people coming back Slocum said.

“It’s off the beaten path but people from all over come in just to get a taste,” Slocum said.

The Adairsville Inn is open for lunch Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and for dinner Thursday though Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The restaurant also is open on Sunday from noon to 2:30 p.m.

“We want people to know that there is a restaurant in Bartow County that cares about people,” Slocum said. “We care and we want people to feel like they are at home.”
