The Alexander baseball team advanced to the semifinals of the Class 4A state playoffs after defeating Wayne County in a best-of-three series, two games to one with senior Nick Wise leading the charge last week.

Alexander will travel to Cordele this week to meet Crisp County for a potential spot in the state finals.

The Cougars and Wayne County split a doubleheader May 13 before Alexander won the series-deciding game the next day.

In game one against Wayne County, Alexander dropped the contest 2-1 despite Wise delivering two hits and driving in the Cougars’ only scored run. The second game saw Wise throw a seven-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts from the mound as Alexander won the contest 4-0. He also had two hits from the plate in the victory, including a two-run home run.

In the rubber game of the series on May 14, the Cougars found themselves down 6-4 in the top of the seventh inning with the season on the line. Wise proceeded to hit a three-run home run to give Alexander a 7-6 lead which was never relinquished as it won the contest 13-7. He pitched 1-1/3 innings in the game as well, allowing no runs or hits.

For the season, Wise has a batting average of .354 with 34 RBIs, 13 doubles and four home runs. He has also won nine games on the mound with 72 strikeouts.

Alexander began the playoffs by defeating Cedartown in the first round and upsetting the top-ranked team in the state, Marist, in the second round before facing Wayne County.

The winner of the Alexander-Crisp County series will face either Carrollton or Veterans for the state title.

This is the seventh consecutive postseason appearance for Alexander and the farthest it has gone under third-year head coach Chris Brown. The Cougars are a veteran squad led by 11 seniors on the roster and have won 25 contests this season.
