Over the past few weeks, construction has begun at the corner of Main Street and Academy Street with city hall’s parking lot being dug up.
“A lot has happened in the past week or so,” said City Administrator Bob Regis. “Buildings are down. Asphalt is being torn up.”
According to City Center project manager Mike Hall, the project is on schedule and is still set to be completed in summer 2014.
Hall said recent changes to the plan include adding accessible restrooms to the front of the city hall and adding storage and expansion space to the ground floor.
“We’ve rearranged the ground floor to allow for some expansion and community development,” he said.
Hall said the planning team is also in the midst of trying to wrap up outstanding issues.
Meeting with representatives from the Publix just south of city hall are underway to discuss sewage connections. The city has also been in talks with Georgia Power to save a large tree that is in the way of planned power lines.
The design team has selected a brick style for the buildings and is close to deciding on a mortar, according to Hall.
