Alpharetta Rotarians have had a busy month of service.

Members of the club joined together to participate in the Adopt-A-Mile program. The group gathered approximately six bags of trash along Old Milton Parkway from Hwy. 9 to Ga. 400 working to help keep Alpharetta beautiful.

“The Rotary Club of Alpharetta is proud to be a part of helping the city of Alpharetta maintain its beauty by doing its part and cleaning up Old Milton Parkway,” Bill Weeks, President of the Rotary Club of Alpharetta, said in a statement.

Rotarians from the club also recently received training from the newly formed Rotary Leadership Institute held at Gordon College in Barnesville.

The session included 63 participants from various rotary clubs within Rotary District 6900.

Rotary clubs sponsored newly inducted Rotarians, Rotaractors from the North Atlanta Rotaract Club, Rotarians with 10 to 20 years of service as well as District Governors from around the state to attend the Rotary Leadership Institute.

Alpharetta Rotarian Dan Merkel graduated from Part 1 “The Rotarian” while Eric Douglas and Heather Demis completed Part 2 “The Rotary Club.”

Members gained great insight and perspective from sharing ideas and experiences with other Club members from the district.

Additionally, the Rotary Club of Alpharetta donated 1,500 books to the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family YMCA after-school program as one of their Rotary projects for the literacy program.

Book donations included picture books for babies, early readers, chapter books for third to eighth grades, classics such as “Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” “Peter Pan,” “Treasure Island,” “Harry Potter,” “Nancy Drew” and “Black Beauty,” young adult/suspense books, juvenile fiction, how-to and craft books as well as science fiction, non-fiction and educational series books.

“I was very excited when approached by Heather Demis about this Literacy Project,” Gayle Battersby, Executive Director of Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family YMCA, said in a statement. “With over 1,500 books donated, we will be able to enhance our libraries at every Y after school program. With new books comes new excitement about reading. Thanks Alpharetta Rotary.”

The Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family YMCA has 29 after school programs, serving more than 1,800 children after school in the north Fulton area.

“To support literacy development in Alpharetta, we are glad to donate books to the Alpharetta YMCA,” Weeks stated.
