North Fulton Hospital was recently recognized by the American Heart Association with the Gold Plus Award for Stroke Care.

This marks the third consecutive year that North Fulton Hospital has received the Gold Plus Award, which is the AHA’s highest award for providing quality care to stroke patients. North Fulton Hospital’s Stroke Program was also placed on the AHA’s new Target Stroke Honor Roll.

The G ld Plus Award for Stroke recognizes facilities who meet stroke quality measures for 24 consecutive months.

The quality measures include treating suspected stroke victims within four and a half hours of the onset of symptoms, screening for dysphagia and providing stroke education.  Time is of the essence for successful treatment of a stroke.  From the neurologists and emergency room physicians to the nurses and laboratory technicians, everyone at North Fulton Hospital does their part to treat stroke victims as quickly as possible.  In fact, a recent patient received medication within 33 minutes of arrival.

“Our Stroke Center strives to perform quick evaluations of possible stroke victims and administer t-PA for eligible patients within the first 60 minutes after a patient arrives,” said Pat Victor, coordinator of North Fulton Hospital’s stroke program.  “In fact, North Fulton Hospital works very hard to train its nursing staff in all areas of the hospital on how to give t-PA and monitor for any effects so the drug can be administered as quickly as possible wherever the patient is.”

North Fulton Hospital’s Stroke Center has been a Certified Stroke Center since 2005.  The center has five neurologists and two neurosurgeons on staff, in addition to its Program Coordinator.  For more information about North Fulton Hospital’s Stroke Center, visit or call (770) 751-2600.
