Each year during the first full week in May, the U.S. Fire Administration works to raise awareness of arson and provide individuals with strategies to combat it in their community. This year, Arson Awareness Week starts Monday and ends May 10 and focuses on vehicle arson.

“Vehicle arson is a very serious matter,” states Chief Larry Few, Director of the Fulton County Fire Rescue Department. “The motivations behind the burning of vehicles are similar to those of other types of arson crimes. Fulton residents should learn ways they can prevent vehicle arson from happening to them.”

Motivations behind vehicle arson include, revenge, concealing another crime, excitement, insurance fraud/arson for profit and vandalism.

Tips to prevent vehicle arson:

o Park your car in a well-lit area.

o Use a secure parking lot for extended periods.

o Close all windows.

o Remove the key from the ignition.

o Always lock doors, trunk and tailgate.

o Use anti-theft devices.

o Report abandoned cars to the police.

o Don’t leave valuables in plain sight.

o Use a recovery system, such as GPS or Lojack.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, during from 2007 to 2011, local fire departments responded to an average of 20,400 intentionally set vehicle fires, accounting for 7 percent of intentionally set fires and resulting in an average of 32 civilian deaths, 67 civilian injuries, and $176 million in direct property damage.
