The Hiram girls’ basketball team enjoyed one of its best campaigns in program history, winning a team-record 22 contests and going undefeated in Region 5-AAAAA games during the regular season.

The Hornets achieved this record despite having one of the youngest rosters in the state featuring only one junior and senior each. The emergence of sophomore shooting guard Aliyah Thomas helped lead Hiram’s youthful charge.

Thomas averaged more than 21 points in the Hornets’ final five games of the season.

“Aliyah has a great work ethic and is one of the most coachable kids I’ve ever worked with,” head coach Michelle Caldwell said. “She has the potential to be our biggest offensive threat and has qualities that will make her great in the years to come.”

Thomas credited the collective effort of the team for the Hornets’ success.

“Everybody came to practice and worked hard,” Thomas said. “Coach Caldwell kept us motivated and told us what our goals were.”

The team has high expectations for the future despite its season concluding in the first round of the state playoffs to Sequoyah on Feb. 21.

“We’re going to work harder and expect to go further next season,” Thomas said.

Thomas is also a member of the Lady Defenders AAU team that’s also based in Hiram. She plans to pursue a career as a veterinarian.
