The Hiram girls’ basketball team, despite boasting one of the youngest varsity rosters in the state with no seniors and one junior in the playing rotation, has won seven consecutive contests including its first four region games.

Sophomore point guard Amari Price has been the biggest catalyst for the Hornets’ winning streak.

Price leads the team in assists (3.6) and steals (4.0) per contest while also placing second on the squad with 5.4 rebounds each game. She had a season-high nine rebounds and five steals in Hiram’s 55-37 win over South Cobb on Dec. 14.

“Amari is our defensive leader on the floor and worked hard on every possession,” head coach Michelle Caldwell said. “Her effort is tremendous and we need her to continue to play with this intensity throughout the season.”

Price’s elevated play represents a sophomore class that has grown together since middle school.

“We get along as a group and playing on the varsity team last year helped us greatly,” Price said. “We were exposed last year and now we’re up to speed with the other teams.”

The Hornets return to action on Friday at home against Sprayberry.

Price also plays on the Georgia Lady Defenders AAU team that’s also based out of Hiram. She plans to major in pre-medicine in college and pursue a career as an anesthesiologist.
