The Tigers defeated Lowndes County 2-0 in the first round and Marietta by a score of 4-1 on May 7. Freshman midfielder Cassie Balzano scored a goal in both contests for Douglas County.
“Cassie shows great leadership on and off the field while scoring big goals for our team,” head coach Matthew Martin said. “Her best attributes are dribbling through defenders, working into space and finishing at the net. Cassie also works very hard in the classroom.”
Douglas County was defeated by Parkview 4-0 on May 10, ending its season.
“The community has received us well and it was good winning the playoff games with seniors who were critical to our program’s success,” Balzano said.
She also made the difficult transition from middle school to the varsity team as a freshman seamlessly.
“It was a big change because I was playing with seniors who are really good but [it] got easier over time,” she said.
Balzano plays for Southern Soccer Academy club team and plans to join the school’s Beta Club next year. She will pursue a career in children’s health care as a pediatrician, following the path of her uncle who works at WellStar.
