Three-year senior captain Juan Carlos Serna has led the Douglas County boys’ soccer team to seven consecutive wins to start this season. The center midfielder has paced an offense that has averaged nearly four goals a contest.

“Juan is a great player and example for his teammates,” said head coach John Cunningham. “He desires to see teammates play for each other and represent our school well on and off the field.”

Serna credits several factors for the Tigers’ early success.

“We’ve had good practices and been able to execute the game plan Coach Cunningham has put in for us,” he said. “I’m able to push the whole team as a captain and it’s a great feeling for the teammates to rely on me.”

The Tigers made the Class 6A playoffs last season and won a first-round matchup against Rockdale County. Douglas County looks poised to make an even longer postseason run this season.

“We have to stay focused in the game and continue to practice hard,” Serna said. “We have to look forward to improving and giving everything on the field.”

Serna was also a member of the Tigers’ football team this past season as a kicker, averaging more than 37 yards per punt and posting 22 touchbacks. He plans to pursue a career in business management.

Douglas County returns to action Tuesday against Hughes.
