The Douglas County girls’ basketball team has won five of its first six contests this season with junior Maya Benham developing into one of the top players in the state, averaging a team-high 18.8 points per contest. She has scored at least 20 points in three contests, including a season-high 31 points in the Tigers’ 68-58 win over North Gwinnett on Nov. 25. She also had a season-high 12 rebounds in the game, averaging seven per contest this season.

“I’ve worked hard and trying to do better than last year,” Benham said. “This year we’re trying to prove that we can be a postseason team. It’s been a team effort of working together because we’re looking at the big picture of winning our region and competing against anybody in the state.”

Benham also plays for the Douglasville Lady Tigers, an AAU team that also practices on the Douglas County campus.

“Maya is maturing as a player and better understanding her role on the team in production and leadership,” head coach Chet Forsh said. “She is our best outside shooter and she is also fairly versatile.”

Benham will major in sports medicine upon entering college and pursue a career as an athletic trainer.

“I’ve dealt with foot injuries in my career and want to help other athletes return to playing,” she said.

The Tigers return to action Jan. 7 at Westlake.
