The Chapel Hill softball team started its season in strong form, amassing nine wins and dropping only one region contest through Aug. 29. A major factor in the Panthers’ success has been freshman shortstop Savana Sikes.

Sikes’ best game came against Pope on Aug. 15 when she hit two home runs, a single, drove in three runs and scored three runs in a 5-4 win. The win came against Pope’s Kelly Barnhill, one of the top pitchers in the county.

“It felt great to help my team win a game against a really good pitcher,” Sikes said.

Sikes has made a strong adjustment to being the only freshman starter on a veteran squad.

“The girls have welcomed me,” said Sikes. “We’re a good team that’s close.”

Coach Mickey Harper said “Savana has solidified our defense, can bunt, execute a hit and run and drive the ball out of the ballpark.”

Sikes has played softball since she was 3 years old.

“I like having to step up as a leader at shortstop and face pressure,” she said. “Softball allows me to calm down and meet new friends.”

Sikes plays with the Atlanta Vipers club team and is a member of Future Business Leaders of America. She plans to pursue a career in physical therapy.

The Panthers return to action on Thursday against Villa Rica.
