After going winless last season, the Harvester boys’ basketball team had a difficult task of rebuilding the program coming into this season. The Hawks, under the guidance of first-year head coach Jermal McCoy started this campaign with eight losses. However, the team has turned its fortunes around, winning 10 of their last 12 contests and a second-place finish in the Georgia Independent Christian Athletes Association Region East AA Tournament last week. Sophomore Tyler Howard has been a catalyst for the Hawks’ turnaround.

“Tyler helped carry us to the second-place finish in the region tournament,” McCoy said. “He works hard to become better and encourages his teammates to improve with him.”

The Hawks, which will face the winner of Cumberland/New Creation in the state playoffs on Friday at Central Georgia Tech in Macon, are optimistic heading into the postseason.

“I think we’re ready because coach McCoy has done a good job of preparing us,” Howard said. “He has brought in a good system and has taught us well. I try to work as a team player and make sure everyone is organized.”

The point guard also plays for the school’s baseball team as a catcher, shortstop and pitcher. Off the field, he works with his father in auto maintenance and wants to pursue a career as a coach.
