In a news release Tuesday, Atlanta Public Schools announced its status with the Georgia AdvancED Council has been upgraded from accredited in advisement to accredited.

The announcement was made in a letter Monday from AdvancED President and CEO Mark Elgart to Atlanta Superintendent Erroll B. Davis Jr. AdvancED is affiliated with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Davis said he is happy with the outcome and is confident the Atlanta Board of Education is positioned to provide the type of governance leadership that district stakeholders deserve.

“The board should be commended for the work that it did to achieve this status. We are all pleased that this is behind us,” he said.

School board chair Reuben McDaniel said he is delighted about the change in status.

“We are ecstatic that the hard, but necessary, work to retain our accreditation has paid off,” he said. “I am especially pleased that the board, administration, parents and community all rallied to take the necessary steps to make sure that our students have the best opportunity possible to pursue their college and career dreams. Although this is a journey and not a destination, I think we should celebrate this milestone.”

In January 2011, AdvancED placed the district’s high schools on accredited probation due to the inability of the school board to demonstrate that it met the expectations of the accreditation standard on governance and leadership. Board members worked with community stakeholders and district leaders to develop and implement a plan to meet the governance and leadership expectations established by AdvancED.

In November 2011, AdvanceED moved the district’s accreditation status from accredited probation to accredited on advisement. While the district’s high schools were placed on probation and accreditation advisement in 2011, at no time did any of the schools lose accreditation. The recommendation Monday from AdvancED to Davis completely restores full accreditation to all the district’s high schools, including North Atlanta in Buckhead.
