Veterans Day is Sunday, and the cities of Atlanta and Sandy Springs will host ceremonies the days before and after the holiday, respectively, to honor former soldiers.

In Sandy Springs, the city will host its third annual Veterans Day Celebration Monday at 11 a.m. at Morgan Falls Overlook Park, 200 Morgan Falls Road.

The event is free and open to the public. The ceremony’s honorary chair is District 52 State Rep. Joe Wilkinson, R-Sandy Springs, a Navy veteran. The master of ceremonies is retired WSB-TV news anchor John Pruitt, an Army veteran and longtime Sandy Springs resident.

“It is fitting that we pause in our everyday routine to recognize the men and women who have served to protect and defend our country and their families who also sacrifice for our country’s freedom,” said Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos.

The keynote speaker for the morning program will be retired Maj. Gen. Maria Britt, the first female in the Georgia National Guard to become a two-star general and the first woman to hold the position of Georgia Army Guard commander.

In Atlanta, there will be no Veterans Day ceremonies in Buckhead, but the annual Veterans Day Parade will take place downtown Saturday at 11 a.m., starting on Peachtree Street near Ivan Allen Boulevard and ending on Marietta Street. With the parade route passing the Georgia Aquarium, Inside CNN Studio Tours the World of Coca-Cola, those three businesses will host a Veterans Day Celebration in Pemberton Place. Both the parade and the celebration are free and open to the public. The three venues also are offering free or discounted tickets for veterans and military personnel Friday through Nov. 18.

The celebration will offer visitors the opportunity to interact with military personnel representing various branches of the armed forces, see military equipment up close and learn about some of the many programs that support our veterans.

During the celebration, static displays of military equipment covering a variety of eras and representing several branches of the armed forces will cover the Pemberton Place greenspace.
