The New York-based foundation, which supports America’s culinary community, selected Atlanta as one of 10 cities for the second year of its tour celebrating the nation’s best cuisine.
“Since we’ve just opened this new store in Alpharetta, we thought it would be a great place to have the event,” said Doralece Dullaghan, director of strategic partnerships and public relations for Sur La Table. “We felt this was a great opportunity to tell the community about what kind of organizations we’re involved with and that we have relationships with chefs all over the country through the partnerships that we have with organizations like the James Beard Foundation.”
The store opened May 15 and is one of three in the metro Atlanta area. Dullaghan said classes and cooking demonstrations are hosted there every day, with many led by the store’s resident chef Kyle Shankman.
The upcoming event, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature cooking demonstrations and book signings by James Beard Award-winning chefs Anne Quatrano of Bacchanalia in west Midtown and Barbara Lynch of Barbara Lynch Gruppo in Boston. There will also be special tastings provided by High Road Craft Ice Cream and Sorbet in Marietta and The Spotted Trotter in Atlanta.
The evening before, the tour will present A Night of Culinary Stars in west Midtown, a ticketed event where Quatrano and Lynch will prepare a four-course seated dinner, which will be served after a cocktail and tasting reception prepared by five top Atlanta chefs and a master sommelier.
“I think [the Sur La Table events will be] an opportunity for people who may not be able to come [to the Sept. 12 dinner] to go to Sur La Table and have a taste of great cuisine created by [Quatrano and Lynch] because usually when these chefs do a cooking demo, there is a tasting of what they’ve made passed around in the cooking kitchen,” said Susan Ungaro, the foundation’s president. “It’s also an opportunity for people who might not be able to afford to come [Sept. 12] to at least get an opportunity to interact with James Beard Award winners and local artisanal vendors.”
