Paulding County is preparing to build a new fire station to serve part of west Paulding and the airport – and will include special equipment to fight aircraft fires.

The station also will be home to a new 911 center, which is currently at the county’s detention center, said Deputy Fire Chief Joey Pelfrey.

The estimated 17,000-square-foot building is planned to have three bays which will house a rescue truck, pump truck and a Class 4 aircraft rescue fire fighting apparatus.

At last week’s Paulding County Board of Commissioners meeting the board voted to purchase the aircraft truck for $490,569 from Oshkosh Corp.

This vehicle is good to have for military and corporate aircraft using the airport, said Airport Director Blake Swafford.

“It provides an added layer of safety,” he said. “Once we have the corporate hangar activity we will have some bigger aircrafts.”

The Federal Aviation Administration will reimburse the county for 90 percent of the aircraft truck cost, with 2011 special purpose local option sales tax funds paying for the remainder.

“[We are] using the taxpayers’ money wisely,” Swafford said.

County government services director Chuck Rann said the building plans are complete and the site plans should be complete this week.

He said they plan to start taking bids in September and award the bid in October. Construction should begin in November and take between 180 and 210 days for completion, Rann said.

The station will be built near Airport Parkway in Dallas.

Its coverage area will be on parts of western Highway 278 and around Willow Springs Road and McPherson Church Road, Pelfrey said.

This area is currently covered by fire stations one and seven.
