Eleven-year-old Ian Otten likes to draw anything from animals to cartoons, but it was his pencil sketch of Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann that got his art showcased in Sports Illustrated Kids magazine.

Ian’s artwork was featured in the periodical’s August edition. The fifth-grader at Christ the King School in Buckhead drew a sketch that depicts McCann in the midst of throwing a baseball back to the pitcher. His signature backwards cap and facial hair are all detailed in the drawing, which Ian said only took him about two hours to complete.

“He’s my favorite player on the team,” Ian said of McCann.

Ian, who lives in Buckhead with his parents, Sylma and Matt Otten, said it was his own idea to submit the illustration but never heard anything back until he opened the August issue and saw one of three drawings he sent in displayed in the Art Gallery section.

“It was his idea,” his mother said. “I just helped him make the copies and he wrote a nice note. I was so impressed with how fast he was sketching them.”

Ian will take advanced illustration classes this fall and continue to cheer on his favorite baseball team.
