The Buckhead resident’s on-camera career began 13 years ago when he debuted on TLC’s “Trading Spaces,” after launching his own interior design firm in 1999.
Yip is currently in his eighth year on HGTV, and he said the network just finished airing the seventh season of “Design Star.”
“I have a new season of a show called ‘Bang for Your Buck’ this fall, in September or October,” Yip said.
He will be the show’s new host and design expert, traveling around the country and meeting local real estate agents to compare three properties being renovated for similar dollar amounts.
But first, Yip will be a guest speaker, along with HGTV star John Gidding, at the 2012 Fall Atlanta Home Show at the Cobb Galleria Centre near Vinings Sept. 22 at 1 and 3 p.m.
“We are very excited to welcome John and Vern to the Fall Atlanta Home Show,” said Michael Schoppenhorst, director of the show. “Not everyone knows each has a strong connection to our city. Vern is based here in Atlanta and has a master’s degree in management and architecture from Georgia Tech.”
Schoppenhorst said he expects 18,000 to 20,000 attendees.
Yip’s speech is called “Affordable Design — Today’s Trends for Your Home.”
Although he has a home in Buckhead, Yip and his partner, along with their two young children, travel around the country for Yip’s interior design career.
“My family travels with me because as much time as I spend on the road, I don’t want to be separated,” he said. “We spend part of the year in New York and I go to Tampa quite a bit because I have a [furniture and home goods] line called Vern Yip at Home on the Home Shopping Network.”
Yip also volunteers for nonprofits, including UNICEF, for which he is a third-year global ambassador.
“I will be going to the rural areas of Mongolia in the beginning of September to see the work of UNICEF firsthand,” he said.
Additionally, Yip is a monthly columnist for the Washington Post and writes about the convergence of design and travel.
“Vern was with us eight years ago,” Schoppenhorst said. “He is very personable and everyone who came loved him. He took time to actually stop and talk to people.”
As for his future, Yip said he just knows he will keep designing, whether it is for private clients or on TV.
“It’s something I clearly love to do,” he said. “It’s what I feel like I was put on this earth to do.”
