Atlanta Weimaraner Club Rescue is holding its first Barks and Brews fundraiser Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at American Legion Post 140 in Chastain Park in Buckhead. Proceeds from the event will aid the nonprofit in its mission to rescue Weimaraner breed dogs in Georgia.
“Our program is run strictly on a volunteer basis through donations and fundraisers,” said Debbie Rodgers, the club’s founder. “The rescue started in 2007 and … since then we’ve rescued over 350 abused, homeless and sick Weimaraners.”
She said the club decided to organize a beer-tasting fundraiser to do something different from the galas it has hosted in the past.
“We wanted something that wasn’t as formal — a fundraiser where we would get a younger crowd — and everybody loves beer,” Rodgers said.
Club President Lynn Joseph said, “It’s a way to engage our members as well as engage those outside of our group to help our group out. We can reach a more diverse audience by having an event like Barks and Brews.”
The event will feature beer samplings paired with catered food and a silent auction including about 65 items. The beer is being donated by Anheuser Busch. Some auction items include vacations, jewelry, a catered dinner for six and dog-related items, Rodgers said.
The event is for adults 21 or older, and tickets are $25. Those who cannot make it to the fundraiser can still purchase a virtual ticket as a donation.
“We rely on donations and our adoption fees to sustain our organization,” Joseph said.
She said the highest adoption fee is about $275 — less than what the club typically spends per dog, which is about $500. More is spent on dogs with chronic health problems or those that require more medical care than average, Joseph said.
Rodgers said the club is always in need of additional volunteers for tasks like getting dogs from shelters, transporting dogs, assisting with fundraisers and making phone calls and interviewing potential adoptive or foster families.
“We’re always looking for help, as much help as we can get,” she said.
