The ‘Canes defeated Model, 65-55, for the tournament championship.
“This is our first time winning this tournament so it felt great to accomplish that,” said head coach Mike Tobin.
Just as the football team went undefeated in the regular season, the boys’ basketball team has decided to follow the same trend as they went into the winter break with a 9-0 overall record.
Cartersville boys’ basketball has not started a season this well in at least a decade.
For the first few weeks of the season, Tobin said the team was playing well despite not having those players that also played football.
“We went three or four weeks without the football kids. Now that they’ve joined us, it’s like starting a new season,” said Tobin.
To kick off that “new season,” the boys dove into the Pickens Holiday Classic tournament Dec. 27-29.
“We have three real good games coming up. It’s going to be some real good competition,” Tobin said prior to the event.
With a strong record, the ‘Canes must have strong scorers and defenders.
“We have quite a few kids that can score,” Tobin said.
Tobin named three players as his top scorers – junior Ryan Davis, junior AJ Mosby and junior Corey Tobin.
Davis is a 6-foot-4 point guard, Mosby is a 6-foot shooting guard and Tobin is a 6-foot-5 shooting guard. All three of these players are currently averaging 15 points a night.
As for the defensive side of the ball, Tobin said they play “team defense.”
“Defense has been a team effort. If someone scores, they scored against the team,” said Tobin.
Cartersville returns two of their starters from last year, senior Dalven Penn and Davis.
“They’ve done real well. Penn has done great inside,” Tobin said.
With so many good aspects to the team, Tobin still said the ’Canes struggle with one key element of the game — boxing out.
“Our problem is boxing out. We didn’t do good with that last game. If you can do that good, your chances are high of winning,” said Tobin.
The team came up with goals for the season including winning a region and state title. Tobin said feels his team is on the right track to accomplishing them.
