From 2002 to 2007, Cartersville and Cass played each other in the 6-AAA region with the Canes winning every season but the last. In 2007, Cass came away with a 34-7 victory, their only victory against Cartersville in their history together. These two teams have not competed against each other since the season opener of fall 2009 where Cartersville defeated Cass, 14-6.
Cass moves from a full region schedule last season to only four region games this year in Region 7A-AAAA. As they enter this reunion match, Cartersville head coach Frank Barden said he expects to see “a good football team that returns a lot of experience” from Cass.
However, Cass did not manage a single win in 2011, due in part to starting 16 sophomores. Having so many young starters, it was not an easy season for the Colonels, but Cass head football coach Rick Casko said his team “hung in there and worked hard.”
This season, those sophomores are juniors and have gained some experience, but Cass will only see one of their opponents from last season, Northwest Whitfield.
Cartersville is scheduled to play seven region games, allowing the Canes a small window to warm up and learn from their mistakes as they play through the first three games of their season without it counting toward a playoff spot.
Since region play won’t begin for at least another two weeks for both teams, they may choose to hold back some in an effort to prevent injury to key players before the big games.
As the Canes approach this game, with his team winning only half their games last season, Barden made it clear that the opponent his team faces each week is irrelevant since he is more concerned with his team’s performance than who they play against.
“As each week, we must focus on us and how we play and practice,” Barden said.
According to Barden, the Canes have worked hard as they seek to improve from week to week after losing their quarterback to graduation.
With more than 20 seniors returning, the Canes do not lack experience and Barden looks to stick to the strong tradition of football Cartersville has developed over the years.
