Bring One For The Chipper is a statewide initiative to reuse trees by chipping them into mulch organized by Keep Georgia Beautiful.
Jan. 5 residents can drop their trees off at various locations to be chipped. In Roswell, drop points are at The Home Depot on Holcomb Bridge Road and The Home Depot on Woodstock Road from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Home Depot on Windward Parkway in Alpharetta serves as another drop point in the northernmost part of the county from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In Milton, residents can take Christmas trees to Milton High School’s Freemanville Road entrance and Scottsdale Farms in addition to The Home Depot locations.
“The goal is to keep the Christmas trees out of the landfills,” said Janet Liberman with the city of Roswell.
The trees are chipped into mulch and then provided for local businesses, schools and other interested parties who are able to accept at least a truckload of mulch. The mulch is best for areas that need ground cover, not necessarily for gardens, Liberman said.
“To me, one of the greatest things is that the Christmas tree turns into something that can be used,” she said.
Local Keep Georgia Beautiful chapters help with this event across the state, and last year Keep Roswell Beautiful collected more than 8,000 trees for the program. This year the goal is 11,000.
“We try to make it as easy as possible,” Liberman said.
In Johns Creek, Boy Scout Troop 2000 is holding a Christmas tree pickup the same day. With a $10 tax-deductible donation per tree they will be picking up people’s trees from their houses. Those interested in the service should go to www.troop2000.org to register and then leave the tree near their mailbox by 7 a.m. on Saturday.
Milton Boy Scout Troop 841 will also be picking up trees for a donation of $10. Email treepickup841@yahoo.com to schedule a pick up.
