Clayton County School Superintendent Edmond Heatley, Ed.D., resigned his position this morning, effective Sept. 30.

In a prepared statement, David Waller with the communications department of Clayton County Public Schools, announced that Heatley tendered his resignation to Clayton County School Board President Pam Adamson, Ed.D.

Adamson, who said she was saddened by Heatley’s decision to resign, emphasized that the school board did not ask, or in any way pressure, Heatley to resign.

“There were never any discussions on the board concerning Dr. Heatley resigning,” she said.

“Dr. Heatley felt he had accomplished what he set out to do as superintendent of Clayton County Public Schools and had found a place that he could make a contribution,” Adamson added.

The school board president added that although the board had heard rumors that Heatley had applied for another position, “we had no reason to believe it.”

Waller said that during the next few weeks, the school board will appoint an interim superintendent and begin the process of finding a new superintendent for the school system, the fifth-largest in Georgia.

Adamson said, with the 2012-2013 school year having just begun, “our primary focus will remain providing the students of Clayton County with a high quality education during this transition.”

“We are grateful to Dr. Heatley for his service and wish him the best,” Adamson said.

Heatley was appointed superintendent in May of 2009.
