The varsity girls’ and boys’ soccer teams at Colonial Hills Christian School are sharing their coaches this season.

Head coach Will Little is in his eighth year as the girls’ head coach and his first year as the boys’ head coach. The previous boys’ coach got a job out of state and could no longer lead the team.

Little also gets some backup from assistant coach Brenton Widener.

“We practice together using the entire field; girls on one half, guys on the other, but doing the same drills,” said Little.

Little also said that at times the two teams will scrimmage against each other, something that helps the girls, but doesn’t necessarily help or hurt the boys. Little did say that this helps the boys to practice defending against certain plays – corner kicks and foul kicks.

The Rams played Westminster Christian Academy on March 15. Prior to this game, Little said he knew it would be a contest.

“This is our first time playing them so we don’t know anything about them. It’ll be competitive,” Little said.

Prior to playing Westminster the boys were 0-6 and the girls were 2-3, with each of the teams about halfway through their seasons.

According to Little and Widener, the girls are playing well as every game has been close except one. The girls have two players – junior Morgan Hoel and senior Heather Lashley – leading them in the midfield and senior Morgan Scott leading the defense.

As for the boys, Little said the team has “a bunch of new guys.” Little is currently having to start some seventh- and eighth-graders.

“They’re learning how to play, learning from each game and getting better. Some of them just have no experience with soccer at all,” Little said.

The boys are led by senior attacking midfielder Hamish Lamb and senior center defender Jalil Lucas.

While they are young this season, Little said the team has been rebuilding since losing the seniors they had in 2011. That year the boys’ team won the Independent Christian School of Georgia and Alabama soccer championship.

That same year the girls’ team made it to the final four, the farthest they’ve ever made it. Both teams have made it to the playoffs several times in recent years.
