The annual Captain Planet Foundation Benefit Gala is set for Dec. 6 at the Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta. In the spotlight for this year’s event will be five extraordinary environmental stewards and change-making philanthropists.

The honorees are: Erin Brockovich, author and consultant whose story was chronicled in the 2000 Oscar-winning film; David Suzuki and Tara Cullis, husband-and-wife Ph.D. scientists, environmentalist and authors; Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle, a consumer products company recycling waste from U.S. schools through “trash brigades;” and Charles Orgbon III, a Hoschton high school sophomore and CEO of Greening Forward, a company he founded when he was 11. It provides advocacy and action resources to young people around the world.

The evening will celebrate and financially support the success of “One Millionth Child Funded” through the foundation’s environmental youth efforts.

Guests will meet media mogul and foundation founder Ted Turner, the event co-chairs — oceanographer Sylvia Earle and CNN International anchor Natalie Allen — and key sponsor Cara Isdell Lee, representing the Isdell Family Foundation. The event will include dinner by Wolfgang Puck Catering, live musical entertainment and surprise appearances from aquatic friends.

Based on the 1990 critically acclaimed “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” children’s educational TV cartoon series owned by TBS, the nonprofit Captain Planet Foundation was spun off by Turner, a philanthropist and environmentalist, in 1991 to launch innovative projects to inspire and empower children to be environmental stewards around the world.

Over the intervening years, Turner’s daughter, Laura Turner Seydel, and her husband Rutherford have taken leadership roles to instigate programs and fund high-quality educational projects enabling children and youth to understand and appreciate their world through hands-on environmental stewardship projects in schools and their communities.

Santa Claus is arriving early for photo opportunities at Rhodes Hall on Peachtree Street in Midtown. The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, headquartered at Rhodes Hall, is hosting a series of memorable visits with Santa on seven weekend days Dec. 7 through 21.

Avoid long lines and noisy shopping malls, make an appointment to relax and delight in a winter wonderland at the “Castle on Peachtree” and enjoy holiday music, delicious refreshments and art activities while little ones whisper their wish lists to St. Nick.

Built in 1904 for the founder of Rhodes Furniture, Amos Rhodes, the historic castle’s first floor is now a museum and the second and third floors serve as office space for the trust.

The $38 family admission ticket includes refreshments, entertainment and a 5x7 photo with Santa. For an additional $20, you can bring your own camera or video recorder to chronicle the memorable family Christmas event.

The trust was founded in 1973 as a statewide nonprofit to preserve and enhance Georgia’s communities and their diverse historic resources for education and enjoyment of all. All fees for Santa tickets go directly to trust programs.

Reservations and information: (404) 885-7812 or www.GeorgiaTrust.org.
