The Ashford Park School Education Foundation came together in an effort to improve the school privately, where the school district lacked the funds. The foundation has partnered with Uruut, a new type of crowd funding organization that works to not only get individuals involved but businesses and foundations too.
“We believe that unless we have private funds this project would not be completed,” co-president of the foundation Shawn Keefe said. “This whole project of ours has been in the works for about two years now, and the biggest stumbling block has been how to get the funds.
“By partnering with Uruut it gives us to the opportunity to solicit money from private organizations.”
Keefe has two children enrolled in the school and will have two more in the coming years. He said he believes this to be an investment in their education.
Also, he trusts this project will help improve the grounds that have been neglected for years.
The foundation currently has a three-tier plan. The first tier was completed last summer with a brick sidewalk in front of the school.
The second tier is to build an outside amphitheater and plaza, which can be used by both the school and community. The final tier is to replace the playground that is unusable for days after it rains.
Uruut became involved with the project after meeting with Keefe and Sheila Lantier.
Uruut co-founder Mark Fienberg said he was looking at different projects for the company’s start-up and was captivated by the passion these two parents had for the local school and community. Uruut’s purpose is to help build a bridge with technology between the project and contributors.
The foundation has already received its first silver sponsorship from Dr. Stan Cox at Brookhaven Orthodontics.
