Talking to about 100 residents at the Burdett Gym in College Park, Edwards updated his listeners on a $2.3 million health center, $3.2 million in lighting and sidewalks and $600,000 worth of security and traffic cameras.
“We’ve got to make our community walkable,” Edwards said. “It’s a step in the right direction. It brings vitality back. The devil can’t function in the light.”
Addressing the improvements were county health Director Dr. Patrice Harris, Transportation Assistant Director Antonio Valenzuela, and Facilities and Transportation Director David Ricks.
“We’re trying to offer integrated care, so it’s a one-stop shop,” Harris said about combining primary care, wellness and economic services under one roof.
She pointed out a health care void in the area between College Park and Palmetto.
Ricks said the county may add a health center to the South Fulton Government Service Annex on Stonewall Tell Road, as it did to the North Fulton Government Service Annex on Roswell Road.
“In 2012 the board appropriated $2.3 million to [create] a health center complex in relation to what we did in 2010 at the north annex in Sandy Springs,” he said, adding the estimates came in at $5 million. “Maybe we could [establish] a separate health facility, because that’s really the driving need for this project.”
The facility may be a vacant, 10,000-square-foot former auto parts store at the corner of Burdett Road and Old National Highway.
Ricks said he and Harris may give recommendations to the board of commissioners next month.
Valenzuela said the sidewalk plan is for 2.7 miles of landscaped pedestrian pathways to stretch between Wexford Drive and Sullivan Road, with the contract to be awarded in September. He said the security and traffic cameras project is a joint venture with the city of College Park, begun last year, and will extend to Jonesboro Road.
“They should be working by the beginning of June,” Valenzuela said. “The project will be complete by the end of May.”
Valenzuela said the project was funded by state and federal sources.
