Registration is ongoing for the eighth annual tourney, scheduled to take place Monday at Smoke Rise Country Club. It is designed to bring together more than 100 of the county’s top business executives for 18 rounds of golf.
“This has become one of our signature events,” said DeKalb Chamber President Leonardo McClarty. “It’s an opportunity for companies to reach potential new clients and help raise money for programs that promote education and high student achievement.”
In terms of attendance, the DeKalb Chamber Golf Classic has remained relatively flat at around 120 participants year in and year out — a figure that has worked to organizers’ advantage. “I think we’ve been able to achieve more success from a financial standpoint,” McClarty said. “More participants have come by way of sponsors, contributing to the bottom line a little bit more than if you just have individual people sign up.”
Perhaps the secret to the day-long golf tournament’s success lies in organizers’ stated goal of enhancing the experience for all involved.
“We try to make for a really good time,” McClarty said. “I think we’ve been able to create a great experience for our golfers through the course that’s chosen, prizes and give-a-ways [and other amenities].”
While much emphasis is placed on play there, the business side of things is a key component to the Classic.
The event is in keeping with the DeKalb Chamber’s commitment to promoting economic development, expanding business opportunities and providing assistance to businesses interested in locating their principal office or base of operations in the county, the chamber president noted.
“Not to just be an organization dedicated to corporate expansion, the DeKalb Chamber values our burgeoning small business sector,” McClarty said. “Whether it be fostering seminars and workshops or collaborating with other business development agencies, the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce has the contacts and connections to help small business grow, develop and succeed.”
Elsewhere, the chamber’s partnering entity, the DeKalb County Office of Economic Development, is hosting the second of two How to Do Business with DeKalb County seminars at the Maloof Administration Building in Decatur Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Representatives from the DeKalb Office of Contract and Compliance will be on hand to assist and take questions from prospective vendors and suppliers.
That event is free and open to the public.
