Audience members, with signs that read “say no to roundabout,” spoke out of turn after the mayor commented on continuing with design work.
“This is a main thoroughfare,” Davis said. “It’s not a residential street … I say we go and spend the rest of the money and find out what’s recommended.”
Although city council voted at its Oct. 29 meeting to remove certain funding earmarked for the project from the 2013 budget and 2012 budget amendments, the city already spent $68,202 of a $129,000 contract for designing intersection improvement options.
Councilmembers John Heneghan, Doug Thompson and Terry Nall also expressed favor in going forth with the remainder of the contract.
“I think the community needs information,” Heneghan said. “We’ve already spent half the money for design and I don’t want to waste that.”
He added he wanted the plans to be expanded to detail the safety aspects of the designs.
Councilwoman Lynn Deutsch asked if there were a way to amend the contract to include an option that focused solely on pedestrian improvement. Public Works Director Michael Smith said options for pedestrian improvement at the intersection as it currently stands would be limited and not require much design work.
Councilman Denis Shortal was opposed spending further dollars on the design.
“The intersection is not the greatest intersection … but continuing to spend money to take a look at it, unless there’s something that could sway some of the folks on the council that voted against it last time, I don’t think it’s money well spent,” Shortal said.
Councilwoman Adrian Bonser was absent from the meeting.
Also at the meeting, council discussed the efficiency of transplanting the trees currently in the median at Dunwoody Village Parkway. City Manager Warren Hutmacher said the relocation of the trees may not be cost efficient but if the city decided to relocate the viable trees, work would have to be done soon.
City council did not vote on either issue Monday.
The next Dunwoody City Council meeting is scheduled for Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
