The Henry County Democratic Party will celebrate Father’s Day early when it hosts the inaugural Real Fathers of Henry County awards banquet June 6 at 7 p.m.

The event at the Eagles Landing Country Club, 100 Eagles Landing Way in Stockbridge, will include a reception, a silent auction, hors d’ oeuvres, a seated dinner, live music and dancing.

Three fathers, nominated through an essay contest, will be surprised at the event with their awards.

Also featured is Michael Glenn, a former Atlanta Hawks player, five-time author, television sports analyst and CEO of the Mike Glenn Foundation as the master of ceremonies and District 13 U.S. Rep. David Scott, D-Atlanta, as the keynote speaker.

Event chair Kim Atkins said the idea for the event, which is a party fundraiser, came from committee members who wanted to honor the county’s dads and all that they do.

“Many times, fathers are our unsung heroes,” she said. “Since coming up with this idea and following through with a banquet, we’ve had a lot of community feedback related to those interested in participating.”

Patricia Rembert, fundraising committee chair, said she hopes the event not only highlights fathers but also helps the party build relationships with families in the community.

“The [party] is striving to make a difference in the lives of this community’s citizens and we are trying to build positive and supportive relationships with families,” she said. “We feel the key to change in any aspect of society starts in the home and it takes strong, dedicated parents to effect this change.”

Rembert said she also hopes the banquet will be successful enough to become an annual event.

“It is our goal to host an event that represents the many fabulous fathers in our community and show our appreciation to these heroes who often work tirelessly to provide for their families,” she said, “so we hope to continue to honor their contributions and sacrifices.”

Tickets are $50 each.
