Inclement weather forecast for Thursday prompted Douglasville city officials today to cancel the annual Fourth of July parade and postpone the fireworks display until Labor Day, according to a press release from the city.

"The current and immediate future weather conditions have played a major part in the decision process regarding cancellation of July 4 activities for the city of Douglasville," officials stated in the release.

“The safety and welfare of our citizenry is important to us at City Hall, and as it has been experienced in prior years, significant amounts of rainfall can lead to tragic conditions for travel, City Manager Bill Osborne said in a statement.

"With flash flood conditions existing for the day, we believe this is the best decision to make regarding the overall welfare of our community."

The fireworks display will be rescheduled for Labor Day. Other cancellations include the O'Neal Plaza concert scheduled for Thursday night.

Activities for the annual Festival in the Park, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Douglasville’s Hunter Park, are scheduled to go on as scheduled inside the park’s community center, said SHARE House spokeswoman Pat Garner.

Those wanting information on the Willie Watkins Family Picnic Day at Worthan Park can call (770) 489-6571, a press release stated.

Officials posted a phone number, (770) 920-3000, on the city web site for more information.

Meanwhile, the city of Hiram today planned to host its “Red, White and Boom” holiday celebration and fireworks show Friday night despite predictions of inclement weather, according to City Clerk Cynthia Geyer.

City officials will not be making the decision to postpone, reschedule or cancel the event until Friday morning, July 5, Geyer said.

There was no scheduled rain date for the event as of today, Geyer said.

Visit July 5 for more information about the potential postponement, rescheduling or cancellation of the event.

Villa Rica rescheduled its fireworks show, scheduled for tonight, to Aug. 30, according to its web site.
