When push comes to shove, all Eagle’s Landing skipper Toby Evans has to do is consult a wealth of experience that roughly measures out to the size of a baseball diamond.

His decade-long tenure leading the Golden Eagles varsity hard-ball program has produced a fair amount of bright spots and rough patches.

To date, their 2013 campaign is going through much of the same.

Eagle’s Landing — 2-8 heading into play this week — has yet to hit its stride this season … but, a turnaround could be just around the corner.

The Henry Neighbor recently caught up with Evans to talk baseball — from the big picture to his team’s prospects.

 on managing expectations

“Progress doesn’t usually come without [struggling] … as long as you keep doing all the right things and [executing] when the time comes, good things are bound to happen.”

 on the team’s star lineup

“We lost around five players to graduation from last year’s team. Now, outside of [junior centerfielder] Corey [Holloway], I would say our impact players are:

“Fontayne Washington, who’s a senior pitcher/infielder. Then we have Nick Cruz, a junior catcher/pitcher.

“Jaquaan Lee is a senior outfielder who can do some good things for us. Senior first baseman Angelo Carristuillo is pretty solid. Then we have [junior] Bradley Dewberry at shortstop.”

 on his club’s defining traits

“We do have experience. We just gotta improve in certain aspects. But, we’re getting better game by game — which is all I can ask for right now.”

 on his team’s Achilles heel

“Base running is really hurting us right now. We’ve gotta get better on the bases … and defensively.”

 on the big picture

“It’s true — we are getting better game by game. We’re more competitive now than at the beginning of the season.

“For us, it’s just a matter of putting a complete game together … we do that, I feel we can beat anybody.”
