Residents are asked to donate specific items within the categories of new clothing, miscellaneous gifts and personal care items.
These items include new pajamas, nightgowns, bathrobes, socks, underwear, T-shirts, sweatshirts, pants, tennis and bedroom shoes and hats for new clothing.
Miscellaneous gift items requested are board and card games, watches, wallets, CDs, movies, Walkman radios, hair accessories, stationary, pens, pencils and tote bags.
Personal care items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, brushes, cosmetics, cosmetic cases, body lotion, and shaving lotion, after shave, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner are also requested donations.
According to Mayor Mario Avery’s executive assistant Ellen Samuels, the campaign is not being coordinated in any way by the city of Fairburn.
The motorcade is sponsored each year by the Georgia Municipal Association. According to their website, the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade first started in 1958.
Each mayor is asked locally to get their community involved by donating to the cause of Georgia Regional Hospital — a hospital that caters to patients who suffer from mental illnesses.
The only local aspect to the campaign is the donation boxes located at city hall and the fire department.
Donations must be dropped off by today at city hall, 56 Malone St., or the fire department, 149 W. Broad St., in Fairburn.
