“Priceless” is how Wildcats coach Debbie Guilbeau described the senior’s impact.
“She’s that good,” said Guilbeau. “She only makes the rest of our girls better — she sets the standard.
“It’s such an honor to have the opportunity to coach such a great athlete.”
Just consider the hardware that Dabney played a large part in procuring. Two state championships — including the 2012 Class 3-A title — to go along with three region crowns.
The senior harrier capped her prep career off with an individual second place finish overall in Class 3-A play at last week’s GHSA state meet in Carrollton.
“Normally, we have her go out with the top of the pack [of opposing runners], regardless of who they are, and chase them down,” said Guilbeau.
As it turns out, for Dabney, cross country only makes up a third of her sporting life. The tri-athlete also trains intensively with the Dynamo Swim Club and rides a bicycle year-round.
Dabney will be looking to hang up her running shoes in favor of swimming full-time at a Division I school next year.
“Devon works very hard,” said Guilbeau. “She’s a very gifted athlete … I really can’t take credit for that.
“She’s the best athlete I have ever coached … she’s that talented.”
