Alex Plavin made an immediate impact for Riverwood’s girls’ soccer team last year, earning All-Region 7AAAAA honors as a freshman.

The sophomore goalkeeper has picked up where she left off, allowing 1.02 goals per game with four shutouts to help lead a younger and less experienced Riverwood squad to its eighth consecutive state playoff berth.

Plavin has been especially effective against 7AAAAA competition, giving up only 0.66 goals per contest with three shutouts for the Lady Raiders, who are 5-1 in region play with her in goal.

She stepped up with a shutout in Riverwood’s 0-0 tie with defending Class AA state champion Westminster Feb. 20 as well as with two crucial saves in the penalty kick phase of a 2-1 victory over 7AAAAA rival Pope March 7.

“Even though she’s a young player, she comes in with a lot of confidence,” Riverwood coach Donald Macoy said. “She plays on a high-level club team [Buckhead-based Tophat] as well as [the Olympic Development Program]. She is somebody who understands the game beyond her position. She can give instructions to her teammates and knows what she’s talking about.”
