Langston Hughes senior Briunca Caldwell provides more for the Lady Panthers’ basketball team than a stat sheet can show.

“She has a lot of heart,” Langston Hughes girls’ basketball coach Borato Broughton. “Sometimes she shows it in different ways. She is an instrumental part of the team as far as them digging down, fighting and playing hard. She is real tough-minded. I’m very proud of her.”

“I just try to keep the team motivated, hustle and play defense,” said Caldwell, who is the team’s captain.

In the Lady Panthers’ fourth consecutive win, a 63-41 victory over North Clayton last Saturday, Caldwell had 12 points and two steals. A day earlier, she scored nine points in a 57-27 rout of Hapeville Charter.

“She has turned into a very decent post player,” Broughton said.

Even though she is also a member of the soccer team, Caldwell hopes to continue playing basketball in another state.

“I like the excitement that I get from basketball,” Caldwell said. “Whether we lose or we win, I like the excitement that we came together as a team and gave our all.”

Caldwell has a 3.2 grade-point average and an interest in majoring in business.
